Statistics Canada and the Statistical Society of Canada are pleased to announce the three winners of the Contest – My story in numbers!

  • 1st place → Alexander Morgado-Drysdale from Mississauga, Ontario, 10 years old, with his video: "Alexander's story in numbers."
  • 2nd place → Jordan Kozma from Markham, Ontario, 13 years old, with her drawing: "Aboriginal man."
  • 3rd place → Alysha Selvarajah from Vaughan, Ontario, 12 years old, with her video: "Story of millions: The everyday life of Toronto."

Passion for storytelling and statistics often starts at a young age. Statistics Canada recognizes the next generation of storytellers and statisticians in honour of Canada's 150th birthday.

Are you between 8 and 18 years old? StatCan is looking for writers, photographers, videographers and multimedia artists to participate in the contest My story in numbers! As young Canadians, you all have unique stories to tell about yourself, your family, community, region, province, territory or Canada. We want to hear your story—in the artistic format of your choice—to show our country through the lens of statistics and, more importantly, through the eyes of our Canadian youth!

Submit your story before December 1, 2017, 11:59 p.m., Pacific time, for a chance to win cool prizes — courtesy of the Statistical Society of Canada:

1st place → $1,000

2nd place → $500

3rd place → $250

The three winners will also receive a promotional basket of Canada 150 items, courtesy of Canadian Heritage.

What you need to know to participate

  • The contest is open to all Canadians between 8 and 18 years old.
  • Your submission must tell a story (in English or French) about yourself, your family, community, region, province, territory or Canada in a creative and engaging way.
  • You can submit your story using the format of your choice, including short text, video, photography, digital work, poster, drawing, cartoon or infographic.
  • Your story must include at least one statistic from Statistics Canada's website. For inspiration, we have assembled a few resources to help you find interesting statistics. Don't hesitate to ask for help from your parent, guardian or teacher with this task.
  • Your story needs to be your own original work. You must ensure that you have permission or rights to use the images, music, stock film or photos that you display in your submission.
  • You cannot submit more than one story!
  • You must complete and sign a Contest entry form. If you are a minor, you must seek the consent of your parent/guardian. You parent/guardian must complete and sign the last section of the form.
  • You must send us everything (your story and a completed and signed Contest entry form by December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m., Pacific time, using one of these two ways:

    1. Online
    Upload your story to a publicly accessible website, e.g., Google Drive, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Print, complete, sign and scan the Contest entry form (including the signature of your parent/guardian, if you are a minor). Send the form and the direct link to your story by email to: statcan.mystoryinnumbers-monhistoireenchiffres.statcan@statcan.gc.ca, no later than December 1, 2017, 11:59 p.m., Pacific time.

    2. By mail
    Save your story on a USB key. Print, complete and sign the Contest entry form (including the signature of your parent/guardian, if you are a minor). Send the form and the USB key containing your story by mail to Statistics Canada at the address below. Please postmark your entry no later than December 1, 2017. Entries received after December 1, 2017, and lacking a postmark, will not be accepted.

  • Don't forget to read and obey to the official rules.
  • Keep a copy of your story for yourself, as entries (including USB keys) will not be returned.
  • Stories will be judged by a panel of representatives from Statistics Canada and Statistical Society of Canada. Selection will be based on creativity and data usage.
  • The three winning stories will be announced in December 2017 on Statistics Canada's website. Winners will have their stories displayed as part of a special blog article on Statistics Canada new blog, Connecting Stats, Stories and People and will be broadly share on social media.

Official rules

  1. To be eligible, contestants must be between the ages of 8 and 18 at the time of the contest submission.
  2. Employees of Statistics Canada, Statistical Society of Canada and Canadian Heritage and their immediate family members (spouse, children, and grandchildren) are not eligible in this contest.
  3. Contestants must submit their story in either English or French, about themselves, their family, community, region, province, territory or Canada, using the format of their choice, including: short text, video, photography, digital work, poster, drawing, cartoon or infographic.
  4. Contestants must not submit more than one story.
  5. Contestants must complete and submit the Contest entry form. Contestants who are minors must have received written consent form their parent or guardian.
  6. Contestants must submit their story, as well as their completed and signed Contest entry form by December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m., Pacific time, using one of these two ways:

    1. Online
    The story must be uploaded to a publicly accessible website e.g., Google Drive, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Contestants must print, complete, sign, scan and send a Contest entry form (including the signature of their parent/guardian, if applicable) and a direct link to their story by email to: statcan.mystoryinnumbers-monhistoireenchiffres.statcan@statcan.gc.ca, no later than December 1, 2017, 11:59 p.m., Pacific time.

    2. By mail
    The story must be saved on a USB key. Contestants must print, complete and sign the Contest entry form (including the signature of their parent/guardian, if applicable) and send it by mail with the USB key to Statistics Canada at the address below. Contestants must postmark their entry no later than December 1, 2017. Entries received after December 1, 2017, and lacking a postmark, will not be accepted.

  7. The content must not infringe upon or violate any laws or any third party rights, including, but not limited to, copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights and must not constitute material that would be considered libelling, defamatory, a privacy violation, tortious or a contract breach.
  8. Contestants must obtain all necessary permissions, licenses, clearances, releases, waivers of moral rights and other approvals from third parties (including but not limited to all copyright holders and all individuals appearing in the story submission), necessary to use the story submission, in whole or in part, in any way, including to reproduce, make derivatives, edit, modify, translate, distribute, transmit, publish, license and broadcast the story submission worldwide, by any means, without limitation. Any and all such permissions, licenses, clearances, releases, waivers of moral rights and approvals must be included with the story submission.
  9. All submissions are intended for the general public. They must be respectful and courteous. Contestants are fully responsible for everything that they submit. Contest organizers will not accept content that is offensive to an individual or an organization, rude in tone, or abusive. Contest organizers reserve the right to disqualify stories that contain any of the following:
    • racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, or life-threatening content;
    • serious, unproven, unsupported, or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations;
    • abusive, aggressive, coarse, explicit, vulgar, violent, obscene, or pornographic content;
    • content that encourages or suggests illegal activity;
    • announcements, solicitations, advertisements, or endorsements of any organizations or agencies;
    • reference to any commercial activity such as advertising or publicity;
    • attempt to defame or defraud any individual, group or agency;
    • unintelligible or irrelevant content.
  10. To protect their own privacy and the privacy of others, contestants must not include personal information such as phone numbers, social insurance numbers, banking information, resumes or email addresses in their stories.
  11. Each contestant (and, in the case of contestants who are not the age of majority in their province or territory of residence), a parent or guardian must consent to the use, reproduction, publication, transmission and/or broadcasting of his/her name, and/or age, without compensation, in any advertisement, publication or promotion.
  12. Each contestant is limited to one submission.
  13. Each contestant (and his/her parent or guardian) irrevocably and in perpetuity grants the contest organizers, without compensation, the right to use the story submission, in whole or in part, in any way, including to reproduce, make derivatives, edit, modify, translate, distribute, transmit, publish, license and broadcast the story submission worldwide, by any means without limitation.
  14. Story submissions will be judged by a panel of Statistics Canada and Statistical Society of Canada representatives. The decisions of the judges on all matters relating to the contest are final and not open to dispute. Stories that meet all eligibility requirements will be judged on:
    • 60% creativity and presentation of ideas
    • 40% overall usage of statistics to tell a story about themselves, family, community, region, province, territory or Canada.

    The winning contestants will be notified by telephone or email by December 22, 2017, and the winning stories will be unveiled on Statistics Canada's website in January 2018. If a winner does not want their story to be published, the winning story will be awarded to another entry. Only the winning contestants will be notified.

Disclaimer

The contest organizers reserve the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest for any reason, without any prior notice to any contestant.

By entering this contest, contestants agree to abide by these rules and acknowledge that the contest organizers shall not be responsible for any damages, costs, demands, claims or losses of any kind, incurred by any contestant as a result of participation in this contest.

This contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the province of Ontario and any applicable federal laws. These rules govern all aspects of the contest and are binding on all contestants and their parents and legal guardians who sign the Contest entry form.

This contest is void where prohibited by law.

Privacy notice

The personal information we request for this contest is required for the purpose of collecting contest submissions, notifying (a) winners and publishing the winning stories online. The personal information you provide will only be used in accordance with the Privacy Act. All personal information collected from the non-winning contestants will be retained until the winning stories are published and will then be destroyed. The personal information submitted by the winners will be retained for a period of five years as the winning stories may be used by Statistics Canada with the permission of the contestant.
